Unisel Incurs RM37 Million In Losses Following Drop In Number Of Students

The Selangor Government has admitted that Universiti Selangor (Unisel) in Bestari Jaya, Kuala Selangor near here incurred losses to the tune of RM37 million since 2009, following a drop in the number of students.

State education, higher education and human capital development committee chairman Dr Halimah Ali said the location of the campus which was far from the hostels was a factor which contributed to the drop in the number of students between 2009 and last year.

“The drop is due to the distant location of the hostels from the campus, thus causing the students to be disinterested in continuing their studies at the university,” she said.

She was replying to a supplementary question from Budiman Mohd Zohdi (BN-Sungai Panjang) at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting here today.

Currently, Unisel students are placed in temporary hostels in Kota Puteri, about 17km from the university campus.

The present hostel building on the university grounds is undergoing repair works due to cracks.

Meanwhile, when met by reporters in the lobby, Budiman said he was not satisfied with Halimah’s statement.

“There could be many other reasons, maybe a lack of promotion and the failure of the relevant parties to manage the university,” he added.
