IPOH, May 24 – The Barisan Nasional is to focus on serving the people as best as it can through its election machinery for the Kuala Kangsar parliamentary by-election scheduled for June 18, said Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.
Zambry, who is also Perak UMNO Liaison Committee chairman, said the work would require integration, total concentration on the target and not straying from the approaches.
“I have asked all involved in the machinery to avoid the opposition-style approaches and to use an approach that can enable us to be the best choice for the people,” he told reporters after chairing the weekly meeting of the state executive council.
He said there would be no dispute over the candidate, who would be announced by Prime Minister and BN chairman Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
“The Deputy Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi) had emphasised during the meeting yesterday that we will remain united after the announcement of the candidate to represent BN in the by-election,” he said.
It was important for the candidate to be “acceptable”, “likeable” and “winnable” to ensure victory for the BN, he said.
Zambry said the BN would also identify BN or UMNO members who had not voted in the general election in 2013 to come foward and vote this time.
“I wish to clarify that they had stayed away not because they boycotted the BN candidate, but some of them could have died and others could have moved to other states on job transfers and so on,” he said.
Zambry also said that the BN would implement the programmes planned by the late MP Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar.
“He (Wan Khair-il Anuar) had discussed with me the vision for Kuala Kangsar and other matters that he had pledged to his constituents. It is these matters that Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid has asked me to work on.
“What we intend to do is to implement what the late MP had promised to the people,” he said.
The by-election is being held following the death of Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar in a helicopter crash in Sarawak on May 5.
Also killed in the crash was Sungai Besar MP and Deputy Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Noriah Kasnon.
The by-election for Sungai Besar has also been scheduled for June 18. Nominations for both by-elections are on June 5.
